The Landmark Edition is the best way to experience The Chinese Rooms gorgeous adventure, and the developer commentary is a fantastic addition. Dear Esther can be interpreted as a modern ghost story. Set at an abandoned Hebridean island, the player explores a dark island. This walking simulator is rife with intertext and biblical references - a layer cake of potential meanings. Though it is combat free, Dear Esther is not for little kids. Dear Esther is a remarkable, haunting game. Instead, the player explores the beaches, caves, and countryside of an unnamed island, as a mysterious narrator reads random letters to Esther, his deceased wife. Join our bold yet hapless hero Comrade Ivan Ivanovich as he explores lost civilizations, undersea kingdoms, prehistoric jungles and lands beyond imagination. Dear Esther helped spark a trend of narrative-focused indie games, and its great to see it celebrated in such a nice package. Here, there are no puzzles, combat, or non-player characters.
